Northern Lights, vast nature preserves yet to be spoiled by modern civilization, inhabited by elegant moose and brown bears, and even mahoosive glaciers and winding fjords:
Alaska is the trip of a lifetime, and this year, it’s a short direct flight away for millions more people.
Alaska Airlines announced it’s touching down in Detroit and Sacramento for the first time this summer, allowing those based in the Michigan metropolis and the capital of California to reach Alaska without driving down to airports farther away or using connecting flights.
Here’s everything you need to know about this exciting new launch and why Alaska is the perfect summer getaway for 2025:

What To See In and Around Anchorage, Alaska In Summer 2025
The 49th state to be added to the United States, Alaska is America’s unofficial ‘Last Frontier’, and a mountainous, sub-arctic territory famous for epic mountainous scenery, unspoiled nature, home to thriving wildlife, and lively port towns.
Anchorage is a vibrant coastal city and Alaska’s largest, boasting a high concentration of cultural sites, from the Alaska Native Heritage Center, where traditional crafts and indigenous art are displayed, to the Russian-built St. Innocent Orthodox Cathedral.
It also serves as a getaway to southern Alaska’s astounding wilderness, encompassing the nearby Chugach State Park, traversed with snow-capped peaks and dotted with glacial lakes, and Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center, where you can spot brown bears in the wild.
A must-see in the state, the Kenai Fjords are a short 2-hour drive from Anchorage: a collective of coastal fjords littered with otherworldly rocky outcrops, it hosts wildlife cruises from $250, and more-adventurous kayaking tours, near Resurrection Bay, from $99 (check Viator).
The drive to the Kenai Fjords itself, along the Seward Highway, is said to be one of North America’s most beautiful, with numerous viewpoints along the way offering impressive views of the Chugach mountain range.
If you’re staying longer in Anchorage, don’t forget to pay Simon & Seafort’s Saloon & Grill a visit: they have the best seafood, as well as the tastiest reindeer sausage in town, and it’s a casual, no-frills spot with decent pricing.
