Keen on a little Cancun getaway, but you’re worried it may blow the budget? Luxury hotels right on the beachfront and piña coladas by the poolside don’t usually come cheap, after all.
If you’re on a shoestring budget, and you’re able to book some time off to jet off to the sun-drenched Caribbean city in the next few weeks, you’re in luck:
Late spring is the best time to visit Cancun for cheaper prices and smaller crowds, with the January and Easter buzz now past us.
Welcome to Cancun’s official shoulder season, when overnight rates are slashed, even at your favorite all-inclusive hotel, starting as low as $165 a night:

What Is The Cancun Shoulder Season?
Cancun’s at its busiest during 3 periods: Christmas (and coming hot on its heels, the New Year), Easter, and summer.
That’s when most people are able to travel, and tourist influx at Cancun International Airport is usually at its highest. Needless to say, prices reflect the exceedingly-high demand, then:
Most hotels aren’t able to host every guest that’s looking for a room, so they resort to dynamic pricing, which often involves raising rates to attract higher-paying guests and maximize revenue, but in the shoulder season, things work a little differently.

Not only is it a quieter time now to travel, but many will actively avoid Cancun due to the occasional showers—it can rain a little during your stay, or it might as well be perfectly sunny, so you’ll be rolling the dice to find out—and the proliferation of sargassum.
You Can Thank Seaweed For That
Sargassum seaweed has started, and as a result, crowding on Cancun beaches has dwindled.
We won’t lie to you: it’s not like those typically-pristine white sands are looking their best, as despite cleaning efforts from the Cancun municipality, there always is a wrack line, or some residue that washes ashore, not to mention the seaweed beds in the water.

In other words, there might be some black patches in the sea when you go swimming, and you might have to get around mounting sargassum that ends up making landfall.
Authorities are doing their best to keep beaches clean at all times, though, and they often appear seaweed-free in the morning, immediately after cleaning efforts have been carried out.
Cons aside, the pro is that most swimming spots don’t feel crowded, and even if you’re simply hoping to relax within your hotel, your rest won’t be disturbed by small children splashing in the pool or that indiscernible, background rambling.
Now for the part you’ve been waiting for:

Now For The Deals
As the leading source for Riviera Maya-based travel news, our sister website The Cancun Sun has looked at some of the best deals for Cancun-bound travelers on Expedia at the moment, and they’ve come up with quite a list of offers:
For a Budget-Friendly Experience:
- Ocean Spa Hotel: an all-inclusive offering delicious meals, creative drinks, and a number of activities, from kayaking to snorkeling. It is not the Garza Blanca, but prices starting as low as $165-a-night in May, you can’t really complain.
For a Mid-Range Deal:
- Marriott Cancun: it has nicer rooms than the previous entry, more amenities, like multiple pools and a lazy river, more dining options, plus, it’s a household name, with the going rate this season being $429 per night in May.
For an Epic Ultra-Luxurious Splurge:
- Le Blanc Spa Resort Cancun–Adults Only: often considered one of the best resorts in Cancun, this stunning oceanfront property boasts gourmet dining, high-end amenities, and endless pampering for guests. Low or high season, you should be ready to shell out some dough: that will be $900-a-night.

Our friends at The Cancun Sun reiterate that these are mere snapshots of the hotel scene in Cancun this May, and they are not fully representative of the pricing range.
There may be more expensive rates, depending on the date and availability, or cheaper ones.
The best way to find the perfect deal that works for you is to keep an eye on Expedia itself.
The good news is, with visitor numbers decreasing rapidly, and competition getting tighter between Cancun and its decades-long rival Punta Cana, it’s not like hoteliers will have a change of heart about prices anytime soon in the coming weeks.
