The U.S. State Department has just issued new travel advisory updates for 4 countries.
As we are in the midst of one of the busiest travel seasons, it’s important for travelers to be aware of the latest information for staying safe while abroad.
The United States Department of State has recently issued new travel advisories for these four countries:
- Ecuador
- Sri Lanka
- Nepal
- Maldives
The U.S. government has shared different information and updates about each destination, and travelers should consider the recent advisories laid out in more detail below.
Just a few days ago, the State Department also issued travel warnings for 7 other countries—Uganda, Argentina, Denmark, Ecuador, the Dominican Republic, Bolivia, and Peru.
Here’s what travelers should know about the new advisory updates issued this week for each country:
Ecuador
Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution
On June 22, a new update was uploaded to the official travel advisories website regarding Ecuador.
The country remains on “Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution” as in the previous update, only this time, the new information has to do with crime.

The U.S. government has warned about kidnappings and crimes in certain areas, including the popular city of Guayaquil.
The new information indicates that travelers must avoid the provinces of El Oro —especially Huaquillas and Arenillas—, Los Ríos, Santo Domingo, Manabí, Carchi, Santa Elena, and Cañar.
Those areas are of high risk, and higher crime rates have been reported.
Digital nomads heading to this country for the new digital nomad visa must be careful and remain cautious.
Sri Lanka
Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution
This island country in South Asia remains in Level 2 according to the U.S. State Department, and the new information included in the advisories is related to health updates.
According to the new updates shared by the government, there are medicine shortages that might affect travelers, and the U.S. government’s ability to assist is limited.
The country is going through a difficult economic situation, and protests related to the current crisis can erupt at any time.
Also, terrorist attacks have occurred recently in public areas, including tourist locations.
Access to imported goods, medicine, fuel, and food is limited, and there are issues with public transportation. Additionally, power outages happen frequently.
Travelers should be very careful when visiting this country.
Nepal
Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution
This popular destination among adventure travelers also got a new health update.
The U.S. government has said that travelers should know that medical assistance and infrastructure in Nepal do not meet U.S. standards.
Also, there are political demonstrations that might turn into violent situations.
Travelers shouldn’t trek alone and are recommended to stay away from demonstrations.
Maldives
Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution
The main travel warning for the Maldives is related to terrorism. Visitors must know that popular tourist locations and public places have been attacked by terrorist groups.
In the most recent update, travelers are encouraged to monitor and visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Travel Health Notices and also to avoid crowds and demonstrations.
Other Travel Warnings
Along with the countries mentioned above, the State Department also updated Advisory pages for other nations this week:
- Afghanistan – Level 4: Do Not Travel
- Pakistan – Level 3: Reconsider Travel
- Turkmenistan – Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution
- Tajikistan – Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution
- Kazakhstan – Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution
- Bhutan – Level 1: Exercise Normal Precautions
- India – Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution
- Kyrgyzstan – Level 1: Exercise Normal Precautions
Most updates are related to health recommendations that travelers can also revise on the CDC’s website.
For all destinations across the globe, American citizens are encouraged to read the State Department’s recommendations—and follow them on social media—, enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP), and take a look at the U.S. security report.
